Description
KCHU, the voice of Prince William Sound and the Copper River Valley since 1980, is seeking an innovative and visionary General Manager to lead our station into the future. Located in the beautiful coastal town of Valdez, Alaska, KCHU is a vital community resource committed to informing, educating, entertaining, and engaging listeners across the region.
As General Manager, you will oversee all aspects of station operations, including strategic planning, budget management, staff leadership, fundraising, and community engagement. This is a hands-on position requiring both big-picture vision and day-to-day operational focus. You will lead a small but dedicated staff, a committed group of volunteers, and work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure KCHU’s sustainability and growth.
About KCHU:
KCHU broadcasts from Valdez (91.3 FM) with translators in Cordova (88.1 FM), Whittier (88.3 FM), Tatitlek (88.1 FM), Chenega Bay (88.1 FM), and Chitina, and is carried by two full-service stations in McCarthy (KXKM 89.7 FM) and Glennallen (KXGA 90.5 FM). We are members of NPR and Alaska Public Media, with strong community support and a growing volunteer base.
About Valdez:
The beautiful city of Valdez is nestled in a temperate rainforest surrounded by the Chugach Mountains, Valdez offers year-round opportunities for fishing, boating, skiing, hiking, and outdoor adventure. The town is home to a vibrant arts and music community, excellent schools, and thriving fishing and oil industries.
Requirements
Our Ideal Candidate:
- Passionate about public media and invested in Alaska and the region.
- Holds a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or has equivalent experience.
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage multiple responsibilities.
- Skilled in engaging, supporting, and motivating staff and volunteers.
- Experienced in building partnerships with community organizations and leaders.
- Comfortable with fundraising, development, and financial management.
- Able to think strategically while also handling operational details.
- Demonstrates strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Possesses an optimistic, collaborative, and inspirational leadership style.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead fundraising efforts including membership drives, grants, underwriting, and special events.
- Develop and manage the station budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and sustainability.
- Ensure compliance with FCC regulations and all contractual obligations.
- Hire, supervise, and support staff in accordance with board policies.
- Oversee facilities, studios, transmitters, and translators.
- Cultivate community and tribal partnerships, fostering engagement and support.
- Represent KCHU to the public, industry organizations, and partner agencies.
- Coordinate volunteers to strengthen programming and fundraising.
