Company Overview
Current is the nonprofit news service for and about public media in the U.S.
Public broadcasting professionals, including radio and TV station and network employees, independent producers, and national policy makers, rely on Current for information, inspiration and in-depth coverage of our vibrant, evolving, mission-driven field.
Company History
Current was founded in 1980 by the National Association of Educational Broadcasters, the historic forerunner of both PBS and NPR. For several decades, Current was managed financially by WNET, a leading national producer and PBS station that serves the NYC region.
In 2011, Current became an editorially independent service of the American University School of Communication, in Washington, D.C.Assistance from the Wyncote Foundation made this transition possible, and the foundation remains a generous supporter.
In addition, Current’s service to public media is sustained by advertising, institutional and individual subscriptions and donations.
